June 2020 Message from the President

Dear YAAG Member,

This has been a truly extraordinary spring.  YAAG has of course been unable to hold in-person events.  For those members who had already committed to attending either our Whiffenpoof fundraising concert, normally held biannually and scheduled earlier this year for May 1, or our Summer Solstice Party, held annually and scheduled originally for today, June 16, we have offered three options: apply the contribution toward the same event when rescheduled next year, convert it to a donation, or receive a refund of the amount.  If you have any questions about your payments this year, please reply to this message and let us know.

Although we cannot gather to watch the sun set over the water to celebrate the summer solstice, we will still proceed with the business of our annual membership meeting via Zoom. To receive the link and call-in details for a Zoom meeting on Monday, June 29, at 6:00 pm, please RSVP.  I will provide the President's report on the state of your local Yale club, and we will conduct a vote for the slate of 2020-2021 officers and directors.  We hope to see you there.  You may RSVP at the YAAG web site by clicking here for the link.

And despite not being able to offer refreshments and in-person connection, we are pleased to present the next installment in the YAAG-Greenwich Library Speaker Series, wrapping up its fourth year.  Thanks to your generosity and the combined efforts of the YAA and Library staff, YAAG will host Professor Diane Krause of the Yale School of Medicine to discuss Recent Developments in Stem Cell Research and Therapy on Thursday, June 25, at noon. For more information, and to be sent the log-in for that Zoom event, please sign up via the YAAG web site at this link.

We know that all the members of our Yale-Greenwich community have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, some deeply, in ways physical, emotional, personal, professional, and financial.  We extend our sympathies for what you have lost.  We have also been affected, likewise deeply, by the recent responses to racism.  YAAG echoes the statement from the YAA: We at the YAA stand in solidarity with those calling for change. We stand with the black community, our alumni[/ae] who are hurting right now, and everyone who stands up against racism, hatred, intolerance, and injustice. As a society, we must do better. We must be better. And we will be a force for good in effecting that change.

My fellow Board members and I look forward to seeing you in person, and until then we wish you well.

Warmest regards,

Cristina Thais Vittoria '93
